HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SIZE & PLACEMENT for your LIGHT FIXTURE
Pendant lights are perfect for providing focused and directional light where it is most needed. They are often used in task lighting and decorative lighting applications such as over kitchen islands and dining room tables, as well as in reading nooks and bedrooms.
KITCHEN
Decide if you like the look of 2 or 3 pendants. If you go with 3 pendants, the pendant size can be smaller, but if you go with 2 pendants, they should be more oversized.
3+ PENDANT LIGHTS
Measure your island and take into account the amount of space needed between each pendant. They should be 30"- 32" apart for optimal airflow, light spread, and visibility. Then you can go from there and calculate what size pendants would fit above your island considering the fact that they should be at least 6" away from the edge of the island.
Hang the pendants 30” to 36” above the countertop.

DINNING
ROOM
The fixture’s diameter should ideally be 1/2 or 2/3 of the width of the table. For example, a 4’ wide table should be paired with a 24” to 32” wide chandelier. It should be hung 30” to 36” above the table top.
LIVING ROOM
To determine fixture diameter, add the room’s length and width in feet and swap the unit to inches. For example, a 12’x10’ room would need a 22” wide fixture. To determine fixture height, excluding cord length, multiply the room‘s height by 2.5 or 3 and swap the unit to inches. Hang the fixture 7’ above the floor for clearance.
BATHROOM
OR POWDER
ROOM
Pendant lights in a bathroom or powder room can create dramatic ambient and accent lighting. They provide the best possible lighting for activities in front of the bathroom mirror.
They should be hang on either side at the user’s eye level, this help illuminate the entire face and eliminate any shadows.
BEDROOM
Pendant lights hanging on either side of the bed provide an important source of light for tasks such as reading.
An important factor to keep in mind when considering pendant lights is the ceiling height, it should be at least 9'.
To determine the width of the pendant light add up the length and width of the room in feet and use this number in inches.
To determine the height of the pendant light multiply the height of the room by 2.5 and convert it to inches.
In terms of the placement of the pendant lights, they should be between 30-36 inches above the top of the mattress, and no more than a foot from the edge of the bed.
